Wonder Woman as an Icon for Feminism
“I used to want to save the world, to end war, to bring peace to mankind. But then i glimpsed the darkness that lives between their light. I learnt that inside everyone of them there will always be both. The choice each must make for themselves – something no hero will ever defeat”
Wonder Woman
In october 2016, The World Nation made a curious appointment : Wonder Woman would be the global organitation’s new ambassador for woman empowerment. In order to achieve gender equality and empower all woman and girls. There’s so many pro and contra for this statement. Some feminist said that it is a great choice to potrayal Wonder Woman as an icoon for feminism. But in the other hand there is some feminist regret it. So the problem is, is that Wonder Woman appropriate to accept an icon for feminism.
Wonder Woman is one of DC’s superheroes. Come out for the first time in public on october 1941. Wonder Woman illustrated as a woman which birth in Themiscyra, daughter’s of Themiscyra queen. So basically, Wonder Woman is princess of Themiscyra. Was born with Diana as a name, Wonder Woman grew up as a strong woman which trained by her aunt. The general story is Wonder Woman fight for a piece. She does not care about what gender she is. She thought that man and woman has a same capability to fight for a piece. This is why Wonder Woman potrayal as an icon for feminism.
Some of feminist said that Wonder Woman deserve to accept this prizes. As we know, Wonder Woman illustrated as a strong woman which has a capability to against the dictactor and get justice for all. “it is our sacred duty to defends the world” -Wonder Woman- In this case Wonder Woman can convincing the public that woman is not symbolize as a weak creature. Woman can survive even without man. The Amazon people in Wonder Woman proof that they can still alive wiithout a man in their island
But in the other hands, some feminist actor regret the potrayal of Wonder Woman as an icon for feminism. They argued that Wonder Woman is just a fiction. She is just character which maybe created accidently to be an icon of feminism. “None of the fiction character can be an icon of feminism. Dude, they may just someone’s imagination who don’t care about woman anymore” -Albe Galardine- They argue that there’s so many figure in real life which can be an icon for feminism. They may can maping the woman’s problem even better, beause of they real, and they know life and culture in real world. Fiction is just a fairytale. We can set the world in whatever we want to create.
Wonder woman illustrated as a half of God. Created by Zeus in order to fight human which is can’t be ruled, being rude and crowd. It is pretty funny to potrayal wonder woman for feninism. We just can see her in a comic book, or just in a film but can’t see what she did or what her influences in the real world. To be an icon for feminism, the figure should have influence, real act which can bring the changes, makes woman more appropriate in the society.
The woman who can fight is not new; from Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley in Alien, to Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor in The Terminator, this idea has a long pedigree. Connor was a far-fetched feminist figure because her power was concentrated in her ambivalent maternal love – like a hypothetical tiger mother, which doesn’t do a huge amount for female agency. She is still an accessory for male power, just on the other side of the mother/whore dichotomy.
There is another figure which can be icon for feminism because they make a real change and not a fictiom character. Jane Austen for example, everyone knows that Jane Austen is an icon for change, especially for woman. She has change woman mindset from old mindset (woman is ruled by man) to the new mindset which woman is equal with man they can also get an education, a job, and not being underestimated in society.
Another example which more appropriate than wonder woman as an icon for feminism come from Indonesia. Kartini, a young woman which born in jepara. She has so many contribution in woman movement. She break the culture that she thought it was wrong. The culture rule woman, press woman and let the woman underestimated by the society. Kartini broke it, reach her succesfull changes in a very young age. And she succesfull change modern woman mindset about whe they are, and what they can be.
Potrayal Wonder Woman as an icon for feminism is not a great choice. She just illustrated in a fiction which can set in whatever people want to see her. We may can have a high standart for a feminism if we still use Wonder Woman as an icon. There’s few woman that appropriate to get that prizes better than Wonder Woman.
